Economic attitudes polling for the TUC
New polling by Hold Sway for the TUC shows the British public’s number 1 priority for the government is the cost of living, with a heavy focus on energy bills. The survey shows strong public agreement that people who work for a living should “earn a decent wage, be treated with dignity and respect and have secure terms and conditions.” They also back a call for the government to have stronger control over essential services like energy and water.
In a policy test, we found strong cross-party support for:
Helping young people get vocational and skills training
Raising capital gains tax and tax on income from investments to match taxes on wages
Workers on zero-hours contracts to get the right to guaranteed hours after 12 weeks in the same role
A cut in energy bills for low-income households, paid for by a new tax on banks.
Voters also tend to agree that public services should not be run to generate profits for private shareholders.
